PLANET EARTH

Watch it in HD with a 1080p monitor/TV.

It's worth it

YES.

Planet Earth doesn't even have clips of David Attenborough. :( It's just him narrating. I like the stuff with him around and being a badass zoologist.

In my very very humble opinion, the copious amounts of scenery porn and money shots made up for it.

Get the DVDs! Netflix had them a while ago, but IDK if they still do. The DVDs have him in the extras (the extras are like as long as the series IIRC) and he's so badass that he makes up for not being in the actual series. It's been a while since I read about the production but I think he wasn't in it because they didn't have much footage of him; some of it was unusable and he didn't go to a lot of the places where they filmed. It was filmed over a ridiculously long time and the earliest footage wasn't usuable because it had degraded by the time they compiled everything. I know something similar happened with the more recent Life because they didn't film in HD for most of the time and then had trouble getting permission to air it in the US because of that.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Ken Burns: Prohibition

Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (though I'm not entirely sure whether it's considered a documentary or simply a silent film; I see many conflicting opinions about it)

Please Vote For Me

Wild China

H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer (I would recommend reading Eric Larson's The Devil in the White City, though; it also focuses on an architect and the sections with Holmes contain the same information as this documentary plus more.)

Beyond the Myth takes a powerfully candid look at the media and public bias that surrounds “pit bull-type” dogs.

The recent Abolitionists mini-series from PBS has been very entertaining. Still need to watch the last part...

I'm not sure what your interests are, so here are the standouts for me in a few areas of interest.

Nature programs: Frozen Planet, Life, Planet Earth (remastered only), Madagascar, and basically anything Attenborough. Just be sure to get the original Attenborough version because all of those were played on the Discovery Channel in America with celebrity narrators and the footage was all recut and then the scripts rewritten to fit the footage. The result in every case was painful. Also check out Inside the Predator and also Nature's Indestructible Creatures, the only non-Attenborough docs that I've truly enjoyed.

Cultures: Human Planet (best series ever!), Tibet: Murder in the Snow (this is more event than culture but not by much if I remember correctly), The British

Historical eras: Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, The Men that Built America (biographies of big-name industrial magnates during the US industrial revolution)

Historical events: Sinking of the Lusitania, City of Ruins: The Halifax Explosion, BBC History of World War II

Recreations: Walking with Dinosaurs (and the entire Walking with... series), Pompeii: The Last Day

Science: Cosmos, Connections (very dated but so mind blowingly good! There were sequels produced many years later that I didn't personally like as much but YMMV), The Day the Universe Changed (also dated, same presenter as Connections and not quite as mind blowing but still very good).

Man Made Structures: Castles of Europe (1994 series), Magic Kingdom: Imagineering the Magic (also a bio of Walt Disney)

Not sure how to classify this: Choosing to Die (Terry Pratchett doc from 2010 or 2011)
