Yes, people are correct, this is "With the Light". The manga is quite good (I have the first 7 or so volumes, which are the giant sized type, about 3x the size of a regular manga) but sadly it is unfinished at the author died before finishing it. The manga volumes also include personal essays by people who have had experiences with autism (family members or similar) which help mirror many of the experiences detailed in the manga.
It is a "josei" series, so intended for older female readers, but I think it's a good series for anyone with an interest in the subject.
There is also a J-drama "Hikari no Tomo".

I feel like I came off as a little overenthusiastic here, but it is a series I really enjoyed and I think it treats its subject matter with a great deal of respect, especially taking into consideration that in the time/place of the setting, disabilities were very misunderstood. I'm glad there appears to be an interest in this thread about the series!

I have the first seven volumes myself, and I know there's an eighth out there somewhere...but do you know many of the giant ones there are? The only reference I can find to the number of volumes tells me about the smaller ones (of which I believe there are 15; but I could be wrong).

I'm glad to see some enthusiasm for this manga, by the way. It's one of my favorite manga series, and I think it's a really great read on the subject.
