Recs for the old DCU comics

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm interested in reading DC comics (I've only read Marvel so far) and from everything I've heard and every sample I've checked out (and I've heard and sampled a lot), I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in the nu52 relaunch.

So, does anyone have recs for good storylines set in the pre-reboot, post-Crisis DCU? I have no specific character preferences, but I'd like to start with the more central and famous characters as an intro to familiarize myself with the universe. So Superman, Batman, Batfamily, Wonder Woman, the Titans, the Justice League and their members, good crisis crossovers...any of that kind of stuff?

Your subject line made me so excited -- then I read your actual post, and... bummer. I really think you're missing out on a lot of great stuff, if you only focus on the mainstream characters.

Oh no! If you have good recs for non-mainstream characters I'm all up for that too! I'd just like to get a few mainstream recs as well, to kinda get a feel for the universe :)

Yay! I'll try to limit myself to just a few, then :D

What I wanted to rec the most was Enemy Ace, as it's one of my personal favorites (but if you hate war stories it might not be for you). I also love Prez, both the original crazy comic as well as the thought-provoking sequel they did decades later.

The above titles are old -- as in published in the sixties/seventies -- so here are some slightly newer-but-still-old titles that are worth reading as well: Enigma, We3, The Authority, The Legion Of Super-Heroes, Codename Knockout.

+1 on The Authority.

(Also on Long Halloween and The Killing Joke from below.)

And I'm basically a newbie but enjoyed Gotham Central very much. It was excellent.

Justice League International is awesome and everyone should read it.

I'm just gonna list some of the better Batman albums I have in my collection:

Year One, Dark Knight Returns & Dark Knight Strikes Again, Dark Victory & Long Halloween, The Killing Joke... Add Batman to the beginning of each title, obviously. Oh, and Arkham Asylum! Read AA if nothing else, it's pure awesome and the art is amazing.

I was introduced to American comics (having only read manga) through Impulse and Young Justice. Now I think I have heard that these were specifically made to be easy on new readers and they were certainly easy on me, so that might be a good place to start.

The third Blue Beetle's series is all in trades, excellently written and drawn and a good mix of humor and drama. It's also not all that long so it's not so much of a commitment.

I also have a great love of post-crisis Legion of Super-heroes, but getting into that is too complicated for me to recommend it with good conscience. =( (They do have a trade of the beginning which is how I got started, but what you'd really need is a very complete set of torrents.)
