Re: How big are you on patriotism?
I like celebrating May 17th (Norwegian Independence -> fail on you Swedes and Danes for that matter!) with the parades and dressing up (not so much the getting wet and cold, because it always rains) and waving the Norwegian flag around...
And if you put me in front of any kind of sport where we are competing against Sweden or Denmark and I get slightly annoyed if they beat us (the expression: "It don't matter if we win as long as we beat the Swedes" might be my motto)
Other than that, I like my country yes, I wouldn't call me patriotic though
even if I talk a lot about Norway here...
Re: How big are you on patriotism?
rivalneighbour!Re: our National Day ( June 6th ), it's a relativly new thing ( 1916..?) and has either connections to events way back in our past ( Gustav Vasa) or newfangled ideas about constitution. What I took away from hearing of it in school was that it struck me as something of random useless vanity from politicians and that no one else was really that interested.
Of course, now we have neo-nazis and nationalists co-opting it and also the sheeple who scream about how their precious "Swedish Traditions"omg! are in danger of being banned. You know the ones - "I'm not rasist, but..."
In short - I'm not a patriot.
Re: How big are you on patriotism?
Really? Ours is from 1814, and is connected to our constitution and the "yay we are now free from you guys" thing.
Then again it is a big thing here, with it being a Official holiday, and we got the children parade at 11 (in every city and so on) with marching bands and all children from kindergarten and up to 7th grade and off course a couple of Marching bands and so on, then we got the People's Parade at 5, with Sports teams (and similar), our chief of police and Mayor, Russ and then off course anyone who feels like walking in the streets waving flags around.
And you got people standing at the side walks looking at the parades walking by (where I usually am for the Children's Parade - I got family members in it) and we eat good food, and whear either Bunads or just pretty clothes. Children eat a lot of ice cream and play games and so on on the school grounds.
Yeah you got more neo-nazis and nationalists in both Denmark and Sweden than we got here in Norway, at least it seems so on the News. Not that we don't have them mind you.
A couple of days ago two of our politicians had a discussion about "Norwegian Values" on television, where the dude who was all: WE GOTTA PROTECT THE NORWEGIAN VALUES AND TRADITIONS! and so on, could seriously not put words on what Norwegian Values was: and then the other politician (an immigrant, leader of something in our government) came to the rescue telling him: Norwegian values is: taking care of each other and so on. I found it seriously amusing that the dude trying to say that immigrants are ruining our Values and Traditions and he couldn't even tell what they are.
Re: How big are you on patriotism?
See, that's the rub right there. We don't really have an Independence Day, unless you count Vasa and the kicking out the Danes bit (and Skåne was Danish off and on). June 6th was "Svenska flaggans dag" until the eighties, when it was named National Day. And ir wasn't until 2005 that it was made into an Official Holiday.
The King is saluted and there are festivites, of course, but not as grand as yours.
Ah, yes. Trying to define what X nation's traditions and values are seems to be like trying to define what's porn and what's fine erotica. "You know it when you see it."
Re: How big are you on patriotism?
Norway kinda go a bit overboard on 17th of May...
Talking about nationalists, we got people debating on using more than the Norwegian and Sami flag on the Norwegian Independence Day, and in some cities it is done.
Yeah, it was fun listening though, because the not so nice racist politician from the blues (Probably Høyre, because they are always being idiots) was so insistent that Norwegian Values where being ruined and he could not say which values they where: BUT THEY ARE BEING TAKEN AWAY!
