Inside Deep Throat (TW: Rape)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Recently, I watched Inside Deep Throat, a fascinating documentary about the breakout role that movie played for the porn industry and all the censorship issues surrounding it. While most of it's time was taken up with the government angle and what it started to do for women's sexuality (before some feminists decided porn was evil), it also delved into the Linda Lovelace ordeal.

If you don't know, LL was married to an abuser who pretty much forced her into doing porn and much more -- and while I find the people who dismissively said "she was happy (being in Deep Throat)" to be kind of disgusting, I can also see where the footage shown of her supporting the film, blasting the idea of censorship and what-have-you looks like that was how she genuinely felt.

But when she testifies -- much later -- saying that "anyone who watches this movie is watching me being raped," I kind of question that -- from a legal standpoint, anyway. Who would you charge with rape, in that case? It's not like the onscreen partner forced or otherwise coerced her into having sex with him. But the guy who forced her to do the film wasn't the one having sex with her.

So, I'm seriously trying to figure out what kind of charges could ever come up here? And while I think there's room for PLENTY to charge the husband with, I don't really see room for rape to be a part of that (even if "it feels like rape" -- because "feels like rape" means jack all in a court room). Thoughts?

BTW: Inside Deep Throat is streaming on Netflix.

I'd find her a lot more sympathetic if Andrea Dworkin hadn't been involved.

Well okay sure let your distaste for one involved academic decide whether or not an abuse victim is sympathetic I mean it isn't as if that isn't kinda disgusting or anything

I could see a case for prostitution or sexual slavery, but I'm not sure if that encompasses rape at its core or if it's an entirely different legal animal.
