(Anonymous) 2013-01-29 12:53 am (UTC)(link)Well, you know, there IS precedent for a companion having a *good* relationship with a second Doctor, but being best with their first Doctor. For example, Seven and Mel were good together, but Mel with her shrillness and bossiness was always best suited to Six. She was really Six's girl. She was the one who could cut through his blustering and get him to drink his carrot juice, metaphorically speaking, and she didn't need to do that anymore with Seven.
I'd also argue that Rose was better suited to Nine than to Ten. Not that she had a bad relationship with Ten at all, they loved each other very much and got along very well, but I think Nine and Rose complimented each other better.
Not everything is black-and-white, all bad or all good and no flexibility or variation in between. It's not all that different from any other stories where one member of a duo goes through dramatic character development -- the friendship changes too.
