I hate stupid names as much as the next person but I agree that these conversations never end well, they either degenerate into racist "I can't believe this person named their kid Shaquana" type statements or someone freaking out over a name that's actually pretty old and has been used plenty of times before (one example I saw on fark once was this person flipping their shit over the name "Micah" even though uh, WTF it's from the Bible)

I actually agree with the issue of latent racism associated with naming judgments. You don't know how many times I've heard "Oh, you like that name? But it's a black name."

What I don't get is people whining about "made up" names, I mean, all names were made up at some point in time, and who cares? People can get really creative with kids' names, sometimes they come up with ones that sound really cool (to me anyway). I used to substitute teach so I saw a lot of those but I forget most of them by now, they were along the lines of "Quvenzhané" -- even though I haven't seen Beasts of the Southern Wild I hope she wins the Oscar just to piss off all those people whining about her name

Good point; on the other hand, a kid named Jupiter was featured in an article in my local paper today, and I really can't stop cringing about that. Maybe because the idea of someone actually named Jupiter will always remind me of the elderly freedman in Poe's "The Gold-Bug."
