(I still think it's basically true that a lot of the music recommended was not by black artists, despite hip-hop being a predominantly black field) (and that there seems to be an idea that, essentially, the only people who make hip-hop that's different from the 'top 40 hip hop' sort of thing are non-black artists, and that black artists pretty much all make 'top 40 hip hop)
(and I'm really not trying to say that you or anyone is racist, or anything like that; I just think that a lot of the ways that we look at music, and especially hip-hop, on the whole, as a part of our popular culture, are influenced by race and by the image things have in the popular culture; I really really don't want to put any blame on anyone personally for this and I really apologize if anything I say comes off that way)
