I completely agree to your first point! I'm a reasonably attractive lady but last fall I cross-played a character to the point that I didn't look remotely 'hot' anymore (wig, sunglasses, bulky vest-- unrecognizable as a woman from a distance). I was stoked about what I put together but I wasn't getting many picture requests despite having a stupidly accurate costume... but I found someone who did a genderbent version of the same character and we ended up taking a shitload of pictures together for novelty's sake. And I made a friend! We said hi to each other for the rest of the weekend, even though we didn't have complementary costumes for any other day.
