Nope, you're not being ridiculous. That's a helicopter parent right there. Even my dad, who was pretty notorious for lack of privacy and wanting to know ALL THE THINGS (because there might be Men! and I might get Predatored! and and and! Don't you know community colleges are prime ground for sex offenders?! ... yeah), didn't go as far as wanting to have a cell phone open so he could hear everything.

Even if your mom is paying for school, it's still a massive amount of WTFery. As in, I've heard a lot of friends gripe about helicopter parents, and I don't think I have heard this particular plan before. o.O
