What is this, think of the starving children in Africa? People aren't concerned about somebody they know because of great social justice, they're concerned because they have some social relationship with this person and care what happens to her. At a distance, for a lot of people, but that's the nature of internet-mediated communities. It has nothing to do with raising awareness, and doesn't actually need defense -- unless you think every instances of caring more about people whose lives have touched yours than about random people unknown to you requires defense. And if you do think that, your quarrel is with human nature, and it's not a quarrel you are likely to ever win.
