My two cents is that it wasn't bigger news at the time because 1) there isn't really a defined 'front line' in our current operations and 2) plenty of women in specific positions (bomb squad, K9 unit, parachuting, etc) that have been in the thick of things for ages and they themselves were probably a bit underwhelmed by the news, seeing how their lives already ran like they were in these "newly opened" positions because they were, you know?
