Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
Because whilst there certainly is a point at which you can consider any given group toxic and something to distance yourself from, it does seem the line is being drawn awfully quick and strikingly recently.
I guess My Little Pony would be an excellent example of this, but would rather it didn't become the focal point again.

Re: Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
How do you define complicity? Am I condoning brony sexism by liking MLP enough to discuss it?
Re: Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
Lets go with the My Little Pony example. I've seen people here argue that by using the term Brony you are choosing to support the most gross fans, and are partially responsible for rape apologism.
And that the 'average fans' aren't doing enough to distance themselves or shout down the really terrible minority.
Re: Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
The fact is the term Brony has gotten beyond the fandom. An adult who admits to liking the show is going to be called that regardless of self-affiliation.
Who the hell is talking about "rape apologism" in the context of MLP? I must be out of the loop.

This douchenozzle.

There was no organized group of CitR fans who blamed Lennon for his shooting.
Only Mark Chapman is a reprehensible human being in the case of the Lennon shooting. Max Veers and all his victim-blaming friends are reprehensible human beings in that case.
The analogy doesn't work at the most basic of levels.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)So, no, blaming bronies in general for what one asshole who just so happened to be a brony did is bullshit.
Re: Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
It's not just one person.
It's a whole group of people who made it their goal to harass this girl.
Your analogy is rotten to the core.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 02:49 am (UTC)(link)(which is a sentiment that I've expressed myself, and, I mean, it is basically true that most bronies are at best annoying)
Re: Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)It is NEVER okay to say "All members of group X suck because some members of group X suck". What IS okay is to say "some members of group X suck" and, if the situation makes it feasible, call for other members of group X to not tolerate the ones who suck.
Also, you have no right to say what's "basically true". For one, people who annoy you may not annoy someone else. For another, I highly, highly, highly doubt you know every brony in existence, or that you have been able to take a representative random sample.
Re: Fandoms Complicity in its Members Worst Excesses
(Anonymous) 2013-01-30 06:45 am (UTC)(link)If fans want to act on stuff that legitimately falls in the category of "keeping our space nice," confronting behaviors that degrade the community would be awesome. For instance, there are people who go from rp to rp and have a terrible reputation for being pushy, manipulative, and immature about being turned down. The community could talk to these people, name (user)names if they don't change, and make a place for profiles of what known sketchy behavior looks like, so that players who haven't encountered this can think "this person's making me uncomfortable, but maybe I'm overreacting?" and consult it for a reality-check. We need to make a culture where people know how to call out bad behavior without being hysterical and over-dramatic about it, and know that fandom will have their back when they have a reasonable complaint.
But ... my idea of a reasonable complaint is something that is directly affecting you. What kind of media other people enjoy, what kind of kinks they have, and whether their fanfic is to your taste is all their business. They have as much of a right not to be hassled for it as you do.
Some fandoms have aggressive bullying, an overdeveloped ownership culture, and a tendency to make up arbitrary rules from thin air. Some are prey to a certain kind of magical thinking - "if we all just don't write rape fics or only write them in a certain way, there will be fewer rapes!" IMO, this stuff needs to be addressed. The last thing we need is a longer list of traits that decent people "should" hate and dogpile.
