I just don't get why so many fanfics have to have a dozen side pairings. When you start to pair up every single character it can be a bit tiring. Plus sometimes a fic will be so overwhelmed with side pairings that they spend more time with them than the actual main plot/main romance.

I hate that. It always comes off as forced, like the author was thinking "I want this character involved in the story, but I can't have them SINGLE! I MUST PAIR THEM UP WITH SOMEONE!!!"

+1 to this whole thread. My main annoyance was that a lot of people seem to think that these are so popular/accepted that there's no point labeling them, but I admit it's also tiring to scroll by pages of fic that looked interesting until I hit the mile-long list of ships.
