Sometimes I think I saw a different film than the Q fangirls.

Confidence? Yeah, he had that. Competence? Eh, not anywhere near as much he thought he did. He couldn't even figure how to crack the code Silva embedded in a masking programme Q claims he invented, which is especially pathetic when you consider that Bond cracked it after watching for a few seconds.

I don't get why people thought Q was so cool, tbh. He only gave Bond one lame gadget, and, like you said, he wasn't all that competent.

I also don't really get the 00Q thing. They had barely any screen time together. Bond had way more chemistry with Moneypenny.

...Except for where Q was trying to dismantle it, and what Bond actually did was set it off and play into Silva's hand?

Q realized that he needed to find a code to dismantle it. The code Bond found. Of course Q didn't realize that's what he needed to do until seconds before Bond found it. And when the entire security system went down as a result, Q didn't recognize what had happened. And later Q needed to be told the route to lay the false trail along because despite his supposed technical expertise (that he didn't demonstrate once in the entire film), he is a shockingly substandard strategist. That's a major failing for a quartermaster in MI-6 who must anticipate agents' needs in literally any possible scenario in any given location in order to effectively equip them for their missions. Plus, y'know, actually design and build or modify that equipment. Which seems to be the only Q is actually capable of doing, though not very well if you consider that despite the fact that the biometric encoding saved Bond, it would fail him if he hurt his right hand on a mission. Since Bond is constantly getting hurt on missions, the biometric encoding is a stupid idea. When the gun was turned on him, he could and would have saved himself if it hadn't had the biometric encoding.

I hope Bond 24 shows some major growth for Q because he is really out of his depth.
