But he didn't tell her, she just found out. He wasn't trying to get with her or anything. I got the idea he had made some serious attempts to get over it because she was with his friend, with everyone having the idea that he never even liked her. It's one of those idealized unrequited crushes, the "I just want you to know that you are loved even though I know you can't give me anything in return" thing. I can see finding shades of it a bit creepy with him making those tapes, but the guy genuinely didn't seem to be able to help the way he felt.

TBH I don't like the scene very much either and it's probably my least favorite storyline in the movie. The fact that she kisses him is overdoing it a little.
