Nothing's wrong with het romance, but het romance is everywhere, in every type of media, and canon in the vast majority of things with canon relationships. If canons shiptease a het couple, there's a reasonable chance for them to get together at some point. If canons shiptease a gay or lesbian couple, they frequently make it clear it's 'just friends' or 'no homo.'
So, yano, a little representation is nice. Personally, I can't feel all that sympathetic to anyone going 'but what about the het romance!' Depending on fandom you may or may not be justified, but...yeah.
