I don't understand.

BBC is (largely) a good network which makes good shows, and is (generally) appreciative of fandoms rather than being judgemental. It's decided to embrace having a rather bizarre science fiction series as a flagship show for a mainstream network. Plus, BBC has a (relatively) small stable of actors they draw from, and people like following actors from show to show. Therefore, a lot of people who become fans of one BBC show (normally Doctor Who), stick around and end up liking other things the network has to offer. Which is good, because it rewards them for pandering to fandom people rather than yelling 'GET AWAY NERDS!' and running for the hills.

Plus, Sherlock and (the current version) of Doctor Who are by the same person, which is the main cause of the shared fandom, not the nationality. The Hobbit shares a main actor with Sherlock.

Martin Freeman's popular in The Hobbit, but most of the fannishness I've seen is due to Richard Armitage.
