It makes me feel really awkward, although sometimes I do feel some shameful smugness because I am English, despite this country being nothing like how Anglophiles think it is.

It also makes me feel guilty, though. I've lived in Cornwall (the very South West of the UK, about 300 miles from London) for over a decade, and I came to a university near London because I wanted to be able to go there. I wanted to be near a big city with lots of things to see and do, and with lots of opportunities to go to classes for the job I want (and many more job opportunities than there are back home). I really love London, but I feel like I'm being like the Anglophiles who want to move there without actually caring about the rest of the country.

I grew up in Cornwall; it's a lovely place but it's perfectly understandable to want to go somewhere else! I don't think you're doing anything wrong at all.
