Was I the only one who spent the entire movie thinking that he was in love with Peter and avoiding Juliet because he was jealous? I was genuinely surprised when the whole wedding videotape came out and it was focused on her instead of her husband.

Considering he flat out said he wasn't in one of the movie's first scenes, no, not really.

It's not particularly hard to read that denial as, well... denial. I think "Mark is in love with Peter" was pretty well hinted-at until the reveal -- that's what made it a ~twist~.

I never thought he was lying, on my first viewing. I just didn't think he liked her =P

Fine, but a lot of people did, and I don't think that reading is out of bounds taken on its own/before the reveal.

I would have liked that way better, tbh. I mean, I found the movie cute and all (mostly), but it bothered me that the only relationship that was sort of not heterosexual was with that rock star and his manager, and it was left pretty vague. I would have liked a little more acknowledgement of us non-white, non-heterosexuals, even if it was unhappy and unrequited.

There was a lesbian couple that was cut out, sadly. But yeah, not a very diverse movie. Though the moment where Laura Linney asks if he's in love with Peter--and the moment when Liam Neeson asks his stepson if he's in love with a he or a she--seems like an attempt to acknowledge they exist and are equally good.

Me too, anon. I was sure he was crushing on the husband and not on Juliet and then the videotape scene happened. Even if it was meant to be a twist, it left me really disappointed.
