Had you said European instead of British, I would agree wholeheartedly, but it's clear that Tolkien drew extensively from Nordic culture as well when he created Middle Earth. The films are being made by a Kiwi and on location in New Zealand, same with the first series of LotR films. Without looking it up, I would hazard a guess that the cast is multi-national as well.

I compare that to Harry Potter, which is about as British as is possible to be. The cast is British. The locations are British. The films were made in Great Britain and the story is set wholly within some antiquated British culture.

I'm not saying that The Hobbit doesn't reference British customs at all; it does. I'm just saying that I don't think most Anglophiles would start having second breakfast because Pippin does. Or Bilbo, to put the reference into Hobbitier terms. :)
