Not everybody likes boy/girl romance. Some people in fandom are gay, and feel alienated by how boy/girl romance gets treated as the only normal and acceptable way*. Some people in fandom aren't gay, but have trouble relating to the usual depictions of boy/girl romance. People are all different, and thus have a wide range of preferences.

Also, when people are 14 years old or younger, their writing skills usually aren't very developed yet. This goes for if they're writing boy/girl or boy/boy or girl/girl or even gen.

* Some gay fans do like het, but others do not. It's a pretty good reason not to, if you don't.
