I don't get how it's passive aggressive. They both seem to agree he doesn't need to confess to his friend, but besides that it's completely straightforward since he actually means it when he says he has no hope or agenda and he thinks she's great and the whole issue ends here. Seems more like the idea is freeing both of them from the whole thing, not being aggressive.
