Well, I've never seen the movie, but I have to say: oh, God, I cannot fucking stand Nice Guys. I have so many Nice Guy stories that I don't even know where to begin (and also don't really want to because of the SJW situation).

watch the movie! it's the best quality slice of romcom cheese you can find! There's some disparities with reality (where aren't there), but it's a really nice and sweet film! A worthy investment when in a feel good mood. And the best part is there are no 'nice guys'. The example OP gave is pretty much the exact opposite, literally.
Nice guy - being friendly with a girl in hopes of return sex. This guy - being distant to a girl, because he's in love with her and does not want to ruin her relationship with his best friend. I have no idea what the OP is on about.
