And I bet that author would really like to know that their story made a real difference in someone's life. You should tell them.

I agree! I got email once from someone who got through a difficult surgery due to one of my stories, and that made my MONTH. Sometimes we're told by our families that fanfiction is meaningless and stupid and we're wasting our time, and that makes us feel bad that we care about writing it - and hearing that it has HELPED, that it has done something to make someone's life better (or SAVED someone) - that is wonderful.

So because I'm insatiably curious I tracked down the fic and wow. I'm usually just annoyed or disappointed with ED fics but that....yeah. Punch to the gut, that one.

I'm glad it and the comm helped you, OP. It prob doesn't feel it, but whatever form help comes in is good. Sometimes it's a well written fic, sometimes it's a silly community, sometimes it's something on Tumblr or a silly gif. Whatever. It had a positive effect, so it's all good. *hugs*

A lot of people, particularly SJWs, like to herald F!S as a horribly intolerant and anti-social justice community, but stories like this make it obvious that it's not.
