(Anonymous) 2013-02-02 01:05 am (UTC)(link)Seriously, though, they're great characters, and both in much the same way - they occupy a total middle ground in terms of the type of character they are between the high, almost tragic, epic heroism of most of the human and elf characters, and the almost comic realism of the hobbits. And I find it really fascinating, it brings this really fascinating depth and background to the picture in comparison to the rather more stylistically coherent other characters. (I think the other character this is true of is Frodo - but coming from the other way, as it were, and also I think in a characteristically different, more modern way) (also I need to think about this more because I think there's some really interesting stuff about Tolkien's use of style that I hadn't previously thought about so thanks for that).
Anyway, I've been rewatching DS9, and I've definitely been enjoying Rom and Leeta a lot more - in particular, in Favor the Bold and Sacrifice Of Angels - Leeta is cool and adorable but Rom is just way more badass than I remember. "If that's what's written, that's what's written" - when he said that, I was like, shit! That is hardcore.
