That's part of why I'm surprised it got so much hate. It was a film that was perfectly enjoyable even if you knew jack-all about FF.

I guess FF fans just aren't used to movies making more sense than the games often do.

Not only that, but the fact that it was different than any of the existing game canon still fell in line with the Final Fantasy concept, because all of the games themselves (disregarding direct sequels) are different canon.

Maybe there weren't enough buckles and poofy anime hair to hold their interest.
