I know, I've done it myself - it really isn't very good, people

Man, this statement has me so stoked. There are aspects of the game that I really dig, but overall, it didn't grab me. I think that a lot of people are attached to it more because it represented, in some respect, the future of gaming than that it was actually great.

Objectively speaking, it's nowhere near the "best game ever" I just think that for a lot of people it was their first introduction to jrpgs and there's a nostalgia goggles thing going on. There's no denying the impact it had on videogaming culture in the west.

Yeah, that's kind of what I mean. It was hugely influential, and I think it's easy to conflate that with quality.

Totally this. Whenever I've taken a pop at FF7 I've had a whole rash of people coming back at me telling me about how well it sold and how influential it was and how it topped this, that, and the other all time list.

I've had very few people coming back at me telling me why it's good and why it stands on its own as a game.

I still love the game, and for me it was the story and the characterization that did it despite the occasionally clunky gameplay and dated graphics. FF7 had much more developed characters than a lot of the later titles in the franchise (IMO at least; FFX was the only other post-SNES title besides FF7 that was able to tell a story that I found both well-planned and emotionally engaging).

Wow, that's ... kinda sad, because FF7 does have a lot going for it other than its legacy or technical achievements. (Or how OMGCOOL Cloud or Sephiroth are.)
