I don't think it's by the way of their writing or whatnot, but more the fact that there's so many special snowflake trangenders in fandom that it's safer to assume that they're FTM than a cis female.

I swear, there's so many females who get so obsessed with their favorite slash pairing having sex that they believe that they must be destined to be male as well. It's getting old.
