If I want great singing I'll go to an opera. If I'm going to watch a movie, I don't care how well you sing if you can't make me care about the characters. The power of Les Miserables (book or musical) has always been in making you care about these "miserables" whom otherwise you'd never deem to "look down" and notice. Why should I give a shit about some diseased whore? Because she sings well? Or because she's a loving mother willing to do anything for her child, and a human being with dreams and wants who's been cruelly beat down by life? Why should I care about some ex-con who later makes some money and is constantly running from the law? Why should I care about some young idiot with lofty aspirations of revolution?

Without the good acting, they're all just a bunch of annoying, whiny emo twits, navel-gazing as they warble on about their feels.

If that's what you want, why not watch any of the many non-musical adaptations? Did you think they made this movie to put forth a new interpretation of the book, or to finally get the musical on screen? I tend to lean toward the latter, which is why I find the standard of singing to be unacceptable.

*shrug* I like it when people sing songs in a way that makes me feel they mean it, and not just mouthing pretty notes. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like the pretty notes as well, and it's the Norm Lewis version that I have on my playlist, but if I'm going to see it as well as hear it, especially for themes as powerful as those in Les Mis, I want to feel it. Susan Boyle sings a beautiful Dream, but she might as well be singing about blue skies and babbling brooks. When Anne sings it, the words have meaning because you can actually believe that she means what she's saying. Same with the other actors and numbers.

TL;DR, music can be very pretty, but it can also convey very powerful emotions. The movie picked the latter over the former. Considering that the musical is a very emotional one, I liked the extra wallop that the songs could convey by pushing the acting over the pretty.

All of this is exactly what I wanted to say. I don't WANT the music to be pretty and auto-tuned to hell. I want it to be emotional, powerful, REAL.

It would be unbearable any other way.

Who said anything about auto-tuning? O__o

As a musician, I applaud this comment. Thank you.
