I suppose this is why I tend not to like musicals. If the music is fantastic but the script sucks, then you've lost me. I'll download the soundtrack but pan the play and never see it again.

I've never seen Les Miserables. This secret has made me decide that there's truly no reason to.

Honestly, go see the movie in theaters. It's really good, and the singing's good. You'll probably like it. I mean, it beats watching a teenager fall in love with a zombie.

But the script...doesn't suck? It's based on a Victor Hugo book and it's actually a really powerful story.

I have an interest in the book, but my impression from all that I've heard is that the musical departs from it to quite an extent. If I'm wrong, then that's well and good; the secret just made it sound like the musical's script is sub-par.

The musical is mostly faithful the book. There are some differences, obviously, but the story is almost exactly the same.

Also, also, this new adaptation does a FANTASTIC job of reintroducing bits of the book where the musical glossed over them. Obviously, not everything (because then you'd have to go Peter Jackson and make like, 3 films) but this fan who has read the book a couple times over was tickled pink by the little bits and pieces they threw back in. It really is a great melding of the musical and the book.
