nayrt, and disregarding (A) because if anon is wrong, anon is wrong.

I agree that it's reasonable to expect changes in the process of adaptation. I don't think that they have to be exactly same. But I think there's an argument to be made that there are important things that you do have to keep - you have to appreciate and adapt, at least, the core of the work, or what's the point of adapting a thing in the first place? To me, it seems pretty clear that a certain amount of change is inherent in adaptation. But at the same time, it's reasonable to say that there's a point past which too much can changed, especially if that change is for the worse.

And I think that's the case with the adaptations of Lord of the Rings; at the very least, I don't think that it's an indefensible position. I think they just fundamentally fail as adaptations, not because this or that minor detail is wrong, or because Tom Bombadil isn't there, but because the core of the thing has been changed, and the aesthetic register is completely different. That's not to say that you're wrong to enjoy them; I can still enjoy watching them as movies. I really mean no offense here to anyone who does enjoy them. But I think they're pretty rotten as adaptation, and radically different than Tolkien's work, and they do his work a disservice. And I think that's the point that ayrt is driving at.

I can certainly see what you're saying, and understand it. I can get behind the idea that the central idea, point, or even soul of a work has been overlooked. I am more annoyed, in truth, by those who object because an adaptation in a different medium isn't exactly the same.

For my own part, however, I view the expression of the same material in different mediums as being completely separate. The Lord of the Rings books and the Lord of the Rings films are based off of the same premise and the same world, but they are, by their very nature, different beasts. I judge each accordingly.

Yeah. I don't know, that's probably ultimately the healthiest position to take. But I just can't. In my mind it's just so much lesser than the book; it just accomplishes so much less. I can't help comparing them in my head. Maybe I'm just broken or something.

Nah, I don't think you're broken. You just see it differently.

I wish that you were able to view the films differently so that you could get more enjoyment and satisfaction out of them. But if you can't, then you can't, and there's nothing wrong with that. We like what we like, and we dislike what we dislike.

Eh. I've never read the series, but I see just as many hardcore Tolkien fans insist that the movies capture the spirit of the books very well as ones who take the opposite opinion, such as yourself.

Idk who to believe.
