While that pairing makes (made?) me a bit uncomfortable for similar reasons it's definitely not to the same extent that it is for you. Really, the reason I don't see it as bad as you do it because of listening to other people's interpretations of their characters where they're like each other's vitriolic best buds. You know, the people whose friendship is expressed with the line of thinking, "How much shit can I get away with, with you?"

I made me feel better about their relationship, as friends or a couple.

Though... for some reason I just can't really ship anything other than explicit canon for this series. I don't know why. I'll read non-canon pairings and like it. I just can't see it in my personal head canon.

Overall I find that game had a lot of ups and downs for me. There were moments I absolutely adored and others that made me wonder what the writers were thinking, if they were at all. So I can really understand where you're coming from when you say that you love the characters but you also think that some of their behaviors are problematic. I hope you find a way to either ignore it, reinterpret it, or make peace with it OP. Good luck.

Also sorry for the long-winded rambling.

I don't like it because it's been ca. 15 years since I grew tired of the trope about women falling for men they initially dislike.

It is a very annoying trope.

Huh, no idea what fandom this is but it strikes a chord for me. A man giving unwanted, harassing attention to a woman, constantly, who makes it clear she doesn't want it - definitely dnw for me. =/

OP

It's from Ace Attorney. The man (Klavier) flirts with just about every character, and most of the time it comes across as rather humorous. Most everyone is at least friendly in return, and the (male) protagonist gets incredibly flustered and sputtery in a way that I find rather adorable.

But when it comes to Ema (the girl, and the character in the series I identify most strongly with)...it just doesn't work. He's a musician, so he's rich and famous and has fangirls and a bit of an attitude, and she seems really turned off by all of that. She works with/for him and is clearly annoyed by all his constant flirting. She doesn't tease him about it either; she's rude and dismissive. It makes me uncomfortable.

It's okay. These things happen.

I've missed your gifs.

(I partly love this one because I remember that exact bridge and I did the exact same thing how many times)

Aw, shucks, thank you. And I missed all of you.

(Ugh, me too. My seven year old self bubbled up again when I saw this gif for the first time.)

So...she's the one who makes you uncomfortable?

Huh.

I guess I'd have to play it myself, then. But I'd probably act the same way in her shoes, from what little I now know. When a guy is flirty and I don't want him to flirt with me, I'd rather be brusque from the very beginning than risk not being absolutely clear about it.

Well, he's doing everything that makes me uncomfortable, but considering Ema is basically me in a lab coat (my passion is English over science but otherwise), seeing her responses and how nothing changes makes me uncomfortable.

ok...so what makes you uncomfortable is not the fact that she's rude, but the fact that he doesn't back down?

Yeah. That would skeeve me out too. Honestly it would probably detract from the positive things I might like about him. =/

Yeah, basically. The problem is, he and his brother and overall my two favorite characters of the entire five-game series. I think he's wonderful outside of talking to her, almost to the point where his harassment seems almost OOC.
