But.. Shoes are dirty, you have stepped in all kinds of disgusting things outside, and then you take that into my house?

THIS.

I never understood how people could not take off their shoes when coming in. Forgive my french but people step in shit, dirty puddles, spit and who knows what else and they expect to come in my carpeted house where I only walk barefoot?

I understand the concept of cultural differences but...at the same time I don't?
It's already bad enough when I have to deal with public workers like the cable guy/plumber/etc coming into my house and forcing me to either beg them to take their shoes off or being forced into rolling the carpets away and then washing the floors.

Ugh. I just...have such bad memories of people coming into my house with their shoes on. >

Even workmen will at least offer to take of their shoes when entering a Norwegian home. Oddly enough we don't really have that many carpets in our home that could get damaged by shoes (off course this is a from house to house thing)

If they are doing work that might damage their feet (carpenters and so on) they kinda have to have shoes on, but then you also have to clean the house afterwards so it isn't a biggie.

Um... OASHA laws in the USA dictates that shoes cannot be removed in certain professions when visiting the client's homes. I've had lots of people beg me to take my shoes off in the home setting, and I must refuse, because I've still injured my feet in the client's home while wearing the required closed-toe, sturdy shoes.

Laws like that are as far away as possible from my country so I can't say that I understand the need for them but I do give leeway for certain professions. Especially if the outcome of the job is messy and I am forced to clean afterwards anyway.

However I can't understand when the TV cable guy suddenly marches in the house because he can't be bothered to take five minutes to take off his shoes.

I just moved to a US city where the main cable provider's employees actually put on disposable shoes that resemble and function like medical scrub covers before entering a home. It was a really nice surprise! But even though practice varies so much here, I think it's still sometimes seen as unusual for people to take off shoes at the entrance. (Once, one of the apartment office workers came in with maintenance to check a leaky window... I ducked into another room but came out when the workers moved outside to examine the window from there, and found the worker still in the entrance, frowning and pushing the door against the shoes in the entrance, as if skeptical about their existence...)

(And after reading some other responses, I feel the need to mention my partner and I are both of southeast Asian descent. So even though we were raised in the US, we were raised to do shoes off in the entrance. Only time we don't stick to it is if we're in a rush and have to pick up something at home quick and head straight back out.)
