A lot of people just think of him as the funny sidekick/comic relief and then bundle his character into this general idea of comic relief, such as prankster, rather than actually try and think about characterization. Is my theory.

I must be lucky then, because I haven't seen a single fic where he'd be written as a prankster. There's been several where he was otherwise unrecognizable as the character, sure, but not because his sense of humor was OOC.

Huh. I have not run into that a lot, but yeah I don't see it either. Sarcastic and cutting and flailing, but not really a prankster or a jokester.

I don't think this fandom actually understands Stiles as a character at all.

(Not that I do, but he reminds me a lot of my brother, so its hard for me to understand why other people see him this way)

Fans have this idea of Stiles that barely resembles canon Stiles. I don't run into prankster Stiles so much, but weeping woobie Stiles, angelic empathetic Stiles, mommy Stiles, these are plagues. I think a lot of fans just see the cute and sad and funny parts of him and run with it.

I think my least favorite Stiles trope - is Stiles running out of town and not even talking to his father.

The only way Stiles would ever stop talking to or visiting his dad, would be because HE HAD TO to SAVE HIS LIFE. Otherwise, no matter how shitty things get with the pack, Stiles will always pick his father over them.

Agreed. But even then I have my doubts. I think if someone seriously threatened his father's life Stiles would flip and fuck some people up.

I've only seen the first season, but based on that, I agree with you. I don't see Stiles as a prankster at ALL. His sarcasm makes my sarcasm happy.
