I'd love to see Don Draper in 2012!

Sometimes, when I'm driving, I imagine that I am a modern version of her (but not crazy), and that the '60s version of Don has somehow been transported through time and landed in the backseat. He is horrified and astonished.

...Um, what?

Well, fannish people have been known to do stranger things.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I hope she pulls over and punches Don in the face, and then leaves him to hitch hike home.

I hate Don Draper so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
That wouldn't work, because in my mind, she doesn't know that he's there. He's kind of like a ghost, forced to experience this new world with limited agency.

(And, honestly, while I sympathize with both characters, I don't like Betsy any more than I like Don. I think they're both pretty awful people, with glimmers of decency in the arcs of each).

Why would he be horrified? Are you a very terrible driver?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Haha no! He would horrified because everything would be strange and weird as a result of him being in the future. Just the interior of the car and the quality of the car stereo would make him be all, "...what the fuck," never mind the music being played and the way Modern!Betsy would be dressed. But then, he looks outside, and the houses are different, and the exteriors of the passing cars are different, and the posture and dress of the people on the street are different, and the storefronts are different. And then, Betsy stops somewhere, and he follows her, and the way she interacts with people is totally different from how the Betsy he knows would interact with everyone, and the setting is different, and someone's texting on an iPhone and there's a flat-screen TV on the wall and someone is using a computer (which he would never have seen) and before you know it, he's practically comatose with culture shock.

That's... a weird thing to be thinking of. I mean, not shocking or anything, just, like, a Family Guy or Robot Chicken clip or something.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

I think it's kind of awesome. Karmic culture shock, where the show's process of slowly showing white dudes don't get to rule the future forever is sped up a shitton and then the paragon of entitled white 60s dudes has to deal with it helplessly.

Mwahahah.

I suppose. But, while I haven't seen all of Mad Men, I don't think Don would be too disturbed. He'd be like "New technology? Sweet. Am I still considered ridiculously good-looking? I am? Excellent." And I'm remembering that conversation he had with that Jewish Department Store heiress at the beginning where she says something to the effect of "You don't really have personal beliefs so much as you just behave the way people think a man like you should behave." Honestly, he'd probably have a few awkward instances, but would adopt the new social norms of being a rich white man today without too much bother.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
We... are maybe thinking of a different character? Considering that he can't even handle the Beatles, I don't think Don would manage very well today.

That's just musical tastes. And Don just behaves how he thinks he should behave. He's taken on a new identity before, remember - a complete change in his environment is the sort of thing he'd quickly adapt to.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
If that's what your read on that scene was, awesome? But given his behavior and the themes of the rest of the recent seasons, I took it as a symbol that he felt society passing him by and resented it. He worked hard to get the 'Don Draper' life and is not dealing well with the idea that that identity was losing its power and mystique.

He could be bohemian when he had the power to: but as social equality becomes not a prize he can dole out but something women and minorities just have, I think he's not coping so well.

Sure, no one copes well to losing their place at the top of the totem pole - he sees his power slipping and he's not happy about it. However, if he's just point blank in another time and place, the dynamic's different. It's not "pick a pro or con side to the new social revolution," it's "this is the way it is over here, adapt." You see it all the time with expats who, 20-30 years ago left the states to Asia, South America, or other less socially liberal places. They come back and they've been absent for all those bits where the USA and west Europe was hashing out how to behave towards women and racial/sexual minorities, but they pick it up pretty fast - faster than, often, their counterparts who stayed in the states.

Heeee!

I imagine what commercials would be fun to show Peggy - to show how weird and strange they've become, or how interesting, or how shocking....

:)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
That would be very cool. I'd especially love for her to see that progress has been made as far as goes the status of women (I'm not saying there's not still a ways to go, of course; there definitely is. But there's definitely been forward movement, and Peggy would appreciate that).

Yes! It would be so fun. And finding tv shows and movies that she would love, and RACHEL MADDOW, and.....

Yes, this is my life. :)

I've only seen about two episodes of Mad Men ever, but now I'm wondering how the characters would react to the existence and clout of Oprah.

As a Betty stan and as someone with a pretty similar sort of imagination, I like this secret, OP. I like it a lot.
