Interesting eats.

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-02-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I got Chuao Potato Chip and Sea Salt chocolate bar as an early birthday present. (It's exactly what the name implies. A milk chocolate bar with potato chips and sea salt.)

As weird as it sounds, it's freakin' delicious. (Probably one of the best chocolate bars I have ever tasted.)

So, what was the last interesting thing you've tasted. And did you like it or not?

Galangal. I was using it to prepare massaman curry paste (making it from scratch for the first time- next time I'm using less shallots.) It has quite a different flavor from ginger, though many receipts say you can sub ginger for galangal. It's got the heat and spiciness of ginger, but with a distinctly different mustardy flavor. I loved it.

Ah!!! This sounds like the smell in the hallway outside my flat at least once a week! It's horrible (to me), and I wish I knew which of my neighbours kept stinking up the entire floor with their cooking.

Wow, that certainly sounds interesting. I notice they also offer a maple bacon bar, which made me go oooh.

I just finished a bag of seaweed peanut crackers. Not too fancy, but I've never had them before. They were quite nice. I think I had a pretty mild allergic reaction to something in there, though!

I've become basically obsessed with beef tendon since eating it for the first time last month. It's so delicious and gooey.

Have you ever had pho? It's a Vietnamese soup dish that's primarily beef tendon and vegetables in a light broth. It comes with sauce on the side (a spicy pepper based sauce and a brown hoisin-like sauce) that you can add however much you want. It's kind of my new obsession (though I like the vegetarian version better actually)

Anyhow, check it out if you like beef tendon and haven't had it already, the way the soup is made, the tendon comes out a lot more tender than it would normally be

I've had pho in the past and thought it was okay, but I'm not big on soups, so it didn't really click for me. I got some uncooked beef tendon as part of a package last month and tried stewing it hotpot-style (so more a stew than a soup) and that was like, damn. So now the stewed version is in my regular lineup.

Understandable. I'm a huge soup person, so I'm really into it, though like I said I prefer the vegetarian version (the soup I had wasn't even called "pho", it was something like, "hau tu cahn nan" but I know that's wrong -- whatever, it's delicious)

I'm also a big fan of the vegetarian clay pot dishes

Oh and I was gonna add, the best version of that vegetarian "pho" soup I ever had was at a Buddhist temple in Nashville, during a Trung Thu festival, so it was free... I felt kinda bad for that but everyone who attended got free food, so

I have dreams about that dish OH MY GOD

I had pho for lunch today. :) it's one of my favorites, and I usually eat it without meat.

Great, now I reallllly want pho.
There's a restaurant not too far from me that has great pho for cheap but I can't really justify eating out again (even if it isn't that much) since we recently went to the grocery store, and I hate eating out by myself. (Still, there's like NOTHING in this house I want to eat right now, weird)

Heee. Eating out too often is one of my failings. My husband and I love to cook and we do plenty of that too but we spend too much money eating out. It's just so good!!! LOL

That chocolate bar sounds amazing, I love the combination of salt and chocolate.

Throw some caramel into that bar, or make it dark chocolate, and I'd be drooling... well, drooling more.

I can't remember the last interesting thing I had was, though. :/ At least, not something that I haven't eaten since I was a kid (e.g. kimchi or seaweed, which apparently some people find weird??)

I had some foie gras this past weekend; I'd eaten it before, and it was just as yummy as I'd remembered it being. I was a little worried that being pregnant might make it gross to me since my tastes have changed a little, but it was not so. :)
