I wish that when we had our massive blizzard in the midwest, a month and a half ago, my state's Department of Transportation had been as proactive as that of several eastern states and just closed the roads outright. Instead they issued a wishy-washy advisory that people should not travel unless it was "necessary." We had over a foot of snow and white-out conditions, traffic was at a dead standstill hours at a time on the main north-south highway in my part of the state, but the DOT didn't actually close anything until there was a giant pileup and 2 fatalities.

I suppose they would have made the excuse that "well, we're used to snow in the Midwest, we know how to drive safely in it"--as if people don't know how to deal with heavy snow in New England and upstate New York?

If you're in Nemo's path yourself, I hope you're safe with some hot chocolate and a good book.

Oh man, that really blows. And the "we can deal with snow" bit isn't an excuse at all. A proactive response comes from knowing how the cards are likely to fall. If you have that knowledge, and you opt not to use it? Not cool.

Hopefully your DOT will learn from that and respond more appropriately next time.
