I've know quite a few families that changed their tune when the issues actually effected them personally. It's really easy to rail against strangers but different when it's your own child or family.

But it's totally up to you. What makes you feel safe and happy. There is honestly no wrong choice here as long as you're happy in the end.

Word of advice though, wait until you're out on your own if you're at all worried. It will give you confidence and added safety, rather than if you told them while you were still living at home or relying on them for your financial/health/home needs.
