Favorite season premieres

What are your favorite season premieres for your favorite shows? (Note: season premieres are a bit different from series premieres, so take note of that when you list them!)

I can't think of much that tops The West Wing's "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen I and II"

"The Impossible Astronaut" / "Day of the Moon" - absolutely brilliant, made even more so by the very very awesome Mark Sheppard (and his father, W. Morgan Sheppard, who played the older version of his character).

Anthropology 101 from Community is PERFECT. It was the second episode ever that I saw. If Abed's film at the end of "Intro to Film" was what sparked my emotional investment in the show, then "Anthropology 101's" speech from Abed to Jeff about the difference between life and tv was what convinced me that I would be sticking around for a long time. *shivers with delight*

Also Anthro 101 is HILARIOUS and the Jeff/Britta spite relationship is the best thing evar amen.

I love "The Eleventh Hour" from Doctor Who, "The Freshman" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and "Go Big or Go Home" from Parks and Recreation. They're three very, very different, but all really excellent examples of everything a season premiere should try to be, depending on the kind of show in question. They're not necessarily the greatest episodes of their respective shows, but the greatest ways to start a new season.

season premieres are a bit different from series premieres

Not if you call each series of a show a series, and don't use season for anything ;)

Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon from Doctor Who. I don't really have any others, as series premieres aren't episodes I remember all that well for some reason.

Ah yes, but I wasn't sure of what the equivalent of a American series premiere would be for a British (and other nationalities) show. What do you call the first ever episode of a show? I thought it would be the pilot, but then I recalled that a lot of times, British shows order and film several episodes right off the bat, instead of sending in pilot episodes...

To be honest, I'm not sure what they're officially called here in the UK. Personally, I'd call the very first episode of a show the pilot episode or the show's premiere :)

I'd probably go for 'series premiere', or just the 'the very first episode'.

A pilot is , as far as I'm concerned, a very specific thing; it's an episode made to demonstrate to the TV network peeps what your show is about so they'll buy it/finance it. Sometimes that episode will simply become the first episode, sometimes it'll be re-edited or refilmed entirely so the broadcast first ep is not the pilot at all.

For example, the Buffy pilot and Sherlock pilots were never broadcast (though they have been made public since) and feature broadly the same cast and storyline but were entirely refilmed with different Willow and Sally respectively. The Being Human official first episode of series one picks up directly after the pilot (which had been shown ages before as part of a pilots season on BBC 3) despite recasting Mitchell and Annie, and to my knowledge hasn't ever been repeated or officially included as part of series 1.

So I wouldn't refer to a pilot unless that was what the show itself called its first episode.

/ramble.

"Points of Departure," Babylon 5. It sets up pretty much everything that comes after.

With the benefit of hindsight, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 3, Episode 1, Evolution.

Not only did they bring Beverly Crusher back, they gave her a better writer.
