Questions about Windows 8

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2013-02-09 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
My laptop is ailing and is in need of replacement. It's running on Vista which tends to have on again off again problems with my desktop PC which runs on Windows 7.

I'm looking for a laptop with Windows 7, but those are getting harder to find (or my google-fu is weak) so I might have to take the Windows 8 plunge. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about Windows 8 being incompatible with certain software, so I would like to know:

How is Windows 8 with art programs like Photoshop CS3 and SAI?

Does it work well with a Wacom Bamboo tablet?

How's the networking between a computer with Windows 8 and Windows 7?

I'm looking forward to your answers :)

Took me some digging and consulting a friend (I'm not really up on laptops) but try this one:

You should be able to buy a Windows 8 Pro laptop and downgrade back to Windows 7. Windows 8, as a platform, is really buggy (think Vista in its early days) and I personally find it so obnoxious that I replaced my laptop within a month (you can pretty much only downgrade when you have Windows 8 Pro, which is generally for businesses.) But the downgrade is always iffy, because it affects software compatibility and drivers, so you have to be really, really annoyed with 8 before I'd recommend it.

That said, depending on the brand you prefer, there are still Windows 7 laptops out there. The HP site definitely still has some nice ones.

Thank you ^^

I just checked and found a good one there for a bit over $500 after shipping/tax. Hopefully it'll still be available after I get my tax return *crosses fingers*

I'm going to be the odd one out, I like my Windows 8 computer, and the only issue I had with it was a driver that kept crashing because of Avast, and that is now fixed. Also the fact that I have to log out to turn my computer off, but that is my fault, I deleted a short cut and now I can't figure out how to get it back...

But I am also one of those people who loved Vista, so I think I lost my right to vote?

The Photoshop version I got works fine on it too, at least when my friend was playing around with it she didn't complain.

Eh? My WoW is working perfectly... If you haven't got it yet I really am not a computer person. But I do use this laptop all the time and it haven't failed me yet, which my Windows 7 laptop used to.

I've heard that Windows 8 is basically useless on a non-tablet. Good luck. :c

Not true. Some fancy apps require you to be on a tablet or touch screen monitor, SOME apps. I am working Windows 8 perfectly fine with my mouse. I also am using an Intuos4 tablet for drawing.

The fact that there's an OS where any apps actually require you to have a touchscreen means that it is not an OS that is designed to be functional with non-tablet PCs.

The only app off the top of my head that requires a touch-screen is the Bjork Biophilia apps that are being ported from the Ipad. Other apps that I have seen in the store do not require a touch screen, at the lest they require a tablet. Like the "paint" app seen in the Windows 8 commercial.

I have no problems with my win8 computer. Well I mean, I DO, but not ones that are specific to windows. It works like any other computer, it just has a cuter interface and you have to manually put together the start menu.

I am using Windows 8 and I have had zero problems with it. Just keep up-to-date with their updates and you should be fine. There is a bit of a learning curve with using the metro start screen, a small curve that is easy to get over.

I am using both Photoshop (CS6) and SAI. They work perfectly fine (and I bet 10 bux that CS3 works on it too.)

And for the record, I hated Vista.

ETA: Forgot your other questions! I have a small Acer ONE notebook with Windows 7 and it networks great with my main Windows 8 PC.

I can't say that a Bamboo tablet with work with Win8, because I have no way to physically check for you. (I am using an Intuos4, though, if that helps)

I actually just got a new laptop that runs Windows 7 a couple months ago, so they're definitely still available.

If you look on Amazon, you can filter the laptops by operating system - over 5000 results for Windows 7, I think you'll be fine.

Avoid Windows 8, at least for a few more years. Counterintuitive and they definitely haven't worked all the bugs out yet.

I have to agree. My dad took the plunge and got Windows 8, and it's been one headache after the other trying to figure out why programs and applications keep disappearing or giving vague error messages.

(Upgrading from 7 seems to introduce strange errors, btw, while a clean installation seems better. Faster too.

Also, it's been only a few months and the computer was already hit by a virus that appears to target the boot part of the computer; it seems the only thing that saved the computer from just giving up on life was that it dual-booted with Ubuntu and so the boot part was different or something idk my father's the one who handled all that crazy stuff orz)
