Slinking back in tears...

[personal profile] othellia 2013-02-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
From yesterday.

Alright, so I'm not really in tears. Just annoyed. It's a Mac 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 upgrade. I've been putting it off for years, but it's finally coming down to Flash plugins not working right anymore, so boom. Finally sat down to upgrade it. Backed everything up incase, which was a good idea since it did the whole upgrade... and then got stuck on the boot up screen. Waited an hour and half, shut it down, rebooted straight from the CD for a clean wipe and install, when through the whole install... and then got stuck on the boot up screen.

Currently on my brother-in-law's computer... not exactly sure what to do next. I'm not sure calling Apple will be of much help... idk.

And now trying to start it up in safe mode to see if that does me any good. *crosses fingers*

(I'm just a simple web developer. I didn't ask for all these OS problems and boot issues!)

How old is the computer? The only thing I can think is that the computer itself isn't entirely compatible with the OS. Is there an Apple store nearby you can take it to? They're pretty good about diagnostics for these sorts of things, but you do generally have to take it in for them to do anything about it. Alternatively, you can try the Apple forums for troubleshooting help.

It's a summer 2009 Macbook Pro. I ordered it a couple days before the came out with the new model, so they actually gave me the new one while still keeping the bill for the old one. And seeing as how 10.6 came out a couple months after that, it should be compatible.

I'm doing one more thing through Disk Utility, making sure everything's completely wiped, and then if that still doesn't work, yeah, I think I'll take it to the Apple store. There's one about a 15-20 min drive away, so that's probably the best next step.

Thanks. <3

I had this problem a while back and for the life of me I can't remember how I got around it. I found a video on youtube that someone posted. I think I had to hit a function key at a certain point but I really just can't remember. I'd look for the video for you but I'm on my phone because the power's out here.

Thanks, I finally got it working about an hour ago. Rebooted from the OS disc - which took a couple tries - and then used Disk Utility to make sure my hard drive was completely wiped. After that I did another install which worked.

Now I just have to get all my old applications back on. I made a Time Machine copy, but am starting to think that I don't want everything back on since my old hard drive was rather full. Most shouldn't be a problem, but CS4 and Microsoft Office suite might give me a couple issues.

Ugh, I feel your OSX-upgrading pain. I bought one of the new versions some years ago and the upgrade didn't work at ALL. I had to wipe and install and I didn't save all the stuff I could have and I regret it.... Thankfully the clean install WORKED, but it took an entire weekend of tears and pain.

Seconding the Apple Store/genius bar recommendation, they're pretty good with stuff like that. Good luck!
