The computer! IT KNOWS ME!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm currently learning to program, and I just had a very odd experience: I found myself worried that if I did something wrong, my text editor would be mad at me, or at the very least be disappointed. What the fuck?

Have you ever found yourself worrying, against all sense, about the opinions/feelings of a completely inanimate object?

Yes - usually when I'm switching from an old one to a newer one. [Like, switching from an old phone to a new one, or - most recently - I was convinced my old computer was mad that I was getting a new one. Logic, what's that?]

I wrecked my car the other day and felt super guilty about it. It was like she (yes, it's a she) trusted me and I let her down and failed to protect her.

I think mostly though that was just because I was so attached to that car. ='(

Frequently. I apologize to my DS lite when I drop it (which it probably wouldn't care about even if it could think, because those things are invulnerable and made of Nintendium), and I've been known to pat or stroke my laptop as if it were a cat or something.

Could be transference though--my actual pets are fish and you can't really pet them.

I used to collect porcelain dolls. At my most irrational, taking the time to compliment every one of them before bed was the only thing that let me sleep.

Writing fanfic for TRON and TRON: Legacy made me care about the feelings of the programs on my computer. Especially because I am writing something by request about Chrome, Internet Explorer, various other programs that are actually on my computer, and so they've all been assigned personalities now.

Oops. :/

Uh, something like that. I got into the habit of having really short, one-sided conversations with the elevator when I was living with my aunt. We were hella overcrowded, and there was no one in the house that I felt like I could just be myself with, and haha computer access ... maybe. Sometimes. I think it was a way of centering and feeling like someone/something was going out of its way to be nice to me with no ulterior motives. By normal earth logic, I know how absurd this is. But still, this machine's giving me a ride was saving me three flights of stairs when I was weighed down with groceries. *shrugs*
