I've never heard of it before but it may be some sort of idea along the line of one girl loves the guy but the guy never notices, falls in love with another girl and marries her and leaves the first girl to her fate.

I'm not sure it's applicable anyway. Eowyn realised how futile her crush on Aragorn was and got over it, and then fell in love with Faramir, which is hardly a terrible fate for her.

ah okay...i see. although, not only what you pointed out, arwen loves aragorn before he even meets eowyn, and aragorn *does* notice, he just already loves arwen. so, yeah, that is completely different.
