(Anonymous) 2007-09-02 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)I don't love it. I don't love Phoenix and Edgeworth as a couple either. I think both Phoenix and Gumshoe are straight. They both have *canon* love interests. Where is the love for the women *they* love?
I've never seen a convincing Gumshoe and Edgeworth fanfic. They're all terrible. If the couple was as obvious and great as its shippers made it out to be then why can't anyone write it in character? Same goes for Phoenix and Edgeworth fans.

... Maybe it's just me, but... I don't find Edgeworth*Gumshoe any more unlikely than Fran*Adrian. You could use the same arguments-- that Franziska obviously doesn't return Adrian's worship, that it's unlikely they'll ever work out between them, and so on, and so forth. But that's not going to stop people from shipping it, because one-sided adoration and affection is always a step in the right direction. Maybe it's not likely that it'll become two-sided, but it's also not likely that Matt and Juan were having violent rival!sex, or that Lana and Mia were secret lovers in law school.
Huh, Nick and love interests... didn't his girlfriend try to poison him? And I certainly wouldn't count Mia or Maya as love interests; Mia is a teacher, Maya is a sidekick. And Gumshoe does have a bit of a thing for Maggey. But having a crush on a girl doesn't mean you can't crush on a guy, too, and female love interests are no more likely to reciprocate than male ones (see: Will Powers and his thing for Adrian. D'aww, but NOT GOING TO HAPPEN anymore than FranAdrian is in canon.) ANYWAY. Bisexuality is good, really it is~
Well, that's 'cause most fanfic sucks. XD I've never read a good Nick*Edgeworth, either, though I know it works as a pairing in my head. Quality of fic doesn't indicate quality of pairing, though-- a good writer can take a literally impossible pairing ("impossible" in that they live in different universes, aren't the same species and breath different atmospheres
lol ZEX*Captain, live in different time periods, etc) and still make it work, because they're a GOOD WRITER and understand the characters. But a poor writer can take a pairing that is also quite literally canon, or shouldn't be difficult with the subtext given, ans still manage to screw it up because they fall back on formulas the characters don't fit, because they don't understand the way characters work. (On that note-- I don't know if you're familiar with Kingdom Hearts, but Riku*Sora has been one of my favorite pairings in the fandom since about 2003. I have yet to read a fanfic that illustrated the pairing in a way I felt was true to the characters, despite the voluminous amount of subtext that can be taken in a romantic light.)I know this is probably a futile attempt. I'm attempting anyway. XD;;

(Anonymous) 2007-09-02 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)That's never stopped anyone from shipping anything but when I hear people complaining about how their couple isn't popular enough maybe they should think about how plausible it is to the people that don't see homosexuality in every single same-sex relationship.
Maggey does like Gumshoe back. I've heard they're canon in the third game. Of course that won't stop crazy yaoi fangirls from trying to explain it away or ignoring Maggey all together. And there's more to Nick's girlfriend than meets the eye.
I look as fanfiction as arguments for a pairing. If it's true what you say about a good writer making any couple work then there should be good fanfiction examples for a couple. Aside from that I've never even heard a good argument for Gumshoe and Edgeworth aside from harping about how Gumshoe's admiration is obviously sexual in nature regardless of his canon relationship with a woman.

That's why their fanfic kinda sucks a lot of the time.Fanfiction as arguments for pairings is... meh. As I (kinda) said in my comment up above, sometimes general!you can see a pairing when there's no fanfic, or where the fanfic totally destroys the concept general!you find attractive in the pairing. I'd be happier with a fanfic about Gumshoe skipping lunch for a week so he could buy Edgeworth some decent-quality tea as a gift than I would be with a fanfic where Gumshoe tearfully confesses his love and begs Edgeworth to consider going out on a date with him. Unfortunately, the latter's what I'm more likely to find, unless I get off my tush and write the former myself. :d And I wouldn't find the latter a good example of the pairing, because it's the same plot I've seen for every unrequited love EVER in any fandom I've ever been in-- it's not the characters, it's caricatures with "Gumshoe" and "Edgeworth" paested on yey.
