Very rude, yes, but it strikes me as something someone might do if they were socially overwhelmed and needed to block out their environment, or if they were very, very shy and awkward. Now, I wasn't there, so obviously I can't say if that was the case, but if it was, calling her a bitch seems a bit harsh.
