The Pope Resigned

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I know there will be a new one but I'm incredibly happy that the pope resigned, don't ask me why.
thinkatory: ([DW] I can see that.)

Because he's a far-right Orthodox asshole and tilted the Church that way? :(

I'm rooting for Archbishop Timothy Dolan (of New York's archdiocese now, previously of Milwaukee's) to get the spot (as are many), as he's likable, less openly an asshole to people the Catholics generally hate, and pretty decent (I've met him in person).

Dolan's quite conservative, though. Which isn't that surprising either in the context of the Church as a whole (which has been broadly trending conservative for quite a while) or in the context of the American Church (which is in general quite conservative itself) but it is still somewhat disappointing for those of us who would like to see someone who is more theologically & socially liberal. Even though it's probably inevitable that the eventual choice won't be. Dolan's also at least somewhat stained by the sex abuse scandal, although that's probably true of literally every possible candidate for the post, tragically.
thinkatory: ([TWW] Josh Lyman.)

Yeah, there are more liberal candidates but not ones who are quite as... public? He's risen up the ranks really fast which makes me suspect he's being groomed. There is the sex abuse scandal issue... well, let's just say I won't be surprised either way. If anything he might be promoted further, to Cardinal, once a spot opens.

Yeah, sure enough, sure enough. He wouldn't be as bad as some, that's for sure, and there's not a lot who'd be much better all told.

That said, I do think it's unlikely that he will become Pope - at least at this election, maybe down the road, but I don't think his profile is as yet high enough, and I think it's more likely that a South American or an African gets it again.

I have no clue about the possible candidates and everything so I was pretty sure that the next guy would be pretty much the same. I was just happy that this Pope resigned.

Though this Dolan sounds okay, keeping my fingers crossed for him :D

the Time magazine article made a rather sinister point about how this may be a smart move on his part to influence things and not be accountable for them. He's made a lot of blunders in his time, but because he's resigning and not, you know, dead, he still has influence over who gets chosen next, and that influence may even extend to this next person's ...reign? period?

kind of like whipping the slate clean for the church but continuing to pull strings.

but don't take me seeriously, that's just the conspiracy theorist in me.

I heard something on NPR about how he's supposed to go into a kind of "good as dead" seclusion, but I don't know if that's just until after the election or for the rest of his life.

i thought he only resigned because of the death threat but hey two birds one stone why not

I've read it elsewhere as well. The problem is not the much the Pope himself as the Cardinals who will elect him, some of which having been chosen by the now ex-Pope. Many of them are extra conservative and they will choose a Pope who will share their vision. Different face but same beliefs and doctrine, probably.

So much for "chosen by God"...

That won't happen. They have to keep their men away from those sinful women parts!
