Some people like the designs, I suppose. And like you said, they kind of have very simple personalities, which can be fun to mold into something more fun. But, yeah, I prefer the mons, too.

I find it ironic that you used a picture from Black and White, which is the first gen in which I've ever given a shit about the human characters. Your rivals have character arcs, the antagonist is pitiable, the big bad makes me shake with rage at some points... granted, it's still a very simple story in comparison to other games, but it's way more story-driven than Pokemon ever was before.

The PCs are still blank slates, though.

I'm here to agree with all this.

I agree with this comment!

It's called self-inserts. Why do you think most of the fics are about the main female character x everyone else?

I like the designs.

And I also like minor characters that I can flesh out. I always make up a personality and a story for my trainer character.

Probably why I'm not in the pokemon fandom, the characters just seem too bland for me. The only characters I remember shipping was red/green and that was a longgg time ago. I do enjoy the fanarts however..

I agree with you as far as the characters you play, but the characters you interact with in the games do have personalities and stories.

Especially considering you used a picture with N who has a major story and definite personality.

But by the same token, how are the mons better? They're just cute little creatures you battle with. I just like the games, period.

I admit I'm not much into Pokémon (not since they started adding 3453534 dif to the original 151), but from my personal pov, B&W was the first game where I cared about the Pokémon AND the human characters.

I think a lot of the fandom characterization comes from the way the characters are written in the Pokémon Special manga (where they do have developed personalities, story arcs, etc).

Was going to say this. The manga versions give the characters tons of personality, backstory, and all that jazz.

Same but I only watch the shows spottily, so that's probably why

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, a lot of the other generations had more personality development in the manga, but seriously... black/white's characters had plenty of personality in the game.

I'm with the other commenters who like to flesh in the personalities of the player characters that don't have any.

And the rivals do tend to have a decent amount of characterization? Characterization isn't a huge part of the game, but it's there if you look for it. Especially in Black and White, if others have said.

Out of those guys, only N has any kind of personality. But he's actually quite well-developed.

Bianca has a lot of personality as well! She's someone who struggles with being "weak" and constantly strives to better herself. The sequel shows her working as the prof's assistant.

But yeah, N definitely has the most personality and backstory.
