What story is this? I can't tell by the picture.

I think this is Three Garridebs? Taking the manhole into account?

If it is TTG then I'd probably agree with OP. If it wasn't for the whole "worth a wound"/BAMF!Holmes scene then I doubt anyone would remember it.

The Three Garridebs. Have to agree with OP, it's one of ACD's worst efforts, along with the Mazarin Stone (phoned in money-spinner play script adaptation).

I think I'm correct in saying that's from The Red-Headed League? It's somewhat difficult to tell from just the illustration.

Assuming that's the case, I don't agree, but I don't think it's one of the best by any means. I think it's a solid story w a clever resolution, but I wouldn't call it a favorite and I'm not going to go to war for it.

Nope, Three Garridebs, popular with shippers due to the scene illustrated. One of the nerdier past-times in SH ACD fandom is about "spot the story from the Sidney Paget illo" (or other illustrators after SP passed away).

I really liked REDH, myself.

I think all of the stories in The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes are weaker than the earlier ones.

The Lion's Mane, though?

But overall I tend to agree. And for some reason it makes me sad.

I'd forgotten about The Lion's Mane! No Watson and one of the more wtf killers.

It made me smile how you referred to it as "one of the more wtf killers"; it sure was wtf.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

I don't think there's even anything really controversial about that.
