The Red Stapler effect...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
You know how red staplers skyrocketed in popularity after the release of the movie "Office Space"?

Now, be honest: have you ever bought something, be it an accessory, a certain model of an appliance, or a particular an item of clothing, because you saw it in a movie or TV show?

The whole of the Supernatural fandom would do obscene and illegal things for a black 1967 Chevrolet Impala...

Who WOULDN'T do obscene and illegal things for a 67 Chevy Impala, though? I mean, it's not like it wasn't an awesome car before that.

Who wouldn't? I'm not even in the fandom!

I bought red converses back in 2007 because the Tenth Doctor wore them. Mind you, they were comfy and useful, but I could have bought any number of other shoes that would have served the same purpose. And I could have bought ones that were actually designed for a girl.

While I'm still trying to think if I have actually bought something, I do know that if I saw one, I would buy a 1967 Chevy Impala in milliseconds.

Edit: I'm proof of above comments

Oh, yeah. After watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as a kid I went out and tried all the candy with that brand name. Though I was disappointed that the candy wasn't as cool as the candy in the movie.

I don't think so? I buy a lot of fan-stuff, but it's pretty much openly fan-stuff, like action figures and limited edition things. :/

I have a black leather jacket that looks like the ninth Doctor's. :D Not a reproduction or anything, it's different, but it's a pretty close resemblance. Thrift stores are awesome.

Mind you, I was looking for a coat like the fourth Doctor's at the time I found it...

I bought a Phineas, Ferb and Perry plush, imported straight from the United States, when I was PnF fanboy when I was younger.

It cost me almost 200 Ringgit.

I still have them. :)

Not buying something new, but I convinced my dad to keep this incredibly frayed and battered coat of his instead of throwing it out because he looked so much like the Tenth Doctor in it.

Incidentally, this is also why I was always super-uncomfortable with all my fellow fans lusting after David Tennant, but that's another issue.

This is sick, and yet I can't help but think about 1984 every time I buy oranges and lemons. That's also why I often buy them together.

I really want one of those new Fiat 500s because of Lupin III...

I have a green velour blazer (I found it in a thrift store!) because it looks like the one Max Fischer wears in Rushmore

I have thigh black socks because anime in general

I get a lot of things in the color red if I have a choice because of Char Aznable in Gundam (we got a red Wii in part because of that... my sister has a red microwave and I'm really jealous)

I haven't, but my SO has. If a character he likes drinks a certain kind of alcohol or eats a certain kind of food, you bet he's at the store buying it as soon as he can. Ricky from Trailer Park Bots eats chicken fingers and pepperoni, so my SO starts eating chicken fingers and pepperoni. Some character Tom Selleck played (Jesse Stone, I think) drank scotch, so my SO starting buying scotch. I could name more examples, but you get the point.

I've been getting my hair cut like one of my favorite anime heroines since I was about 13. Originally I just got it because I really liked that character, but over time I've come to realize it's just plain a good look for me, so I've stuck with it for a little over ten years!

I bout this electric kettle (http://wearsherlock.tumblr.com/post/16070211557/russell-hobbs-1-7l-blue-illuminating-kettle-as) after it was featured in Sherlock. It was on sale? But in the end I left it with my mom when I moved out, because I don't actually drink tea that often.

I've had friends buy me dolls of figurines. I bought a poster or two in my very early teens...

Um... Oh! In middle school I cut my hair very short and for a while styled it like Selphie from FF VIII.

I kinda wish I could buy things that remind me of fandoms I'm in but I really just don't buy things anymore that aren't necessities.

I am still kicking myself about something I didn't buy. Recently, I was poking around a local thrift store when I came across a red leather jacket. It was really cute. It was also $60.00 and I wouldn't get paid for a week and a half. I could have bought it, but I'm not normally a red leather jacket sort of person. Here's the kicker. It was the same red leather jacket, by Club Monaco, that Emma Swan, Jennifer Morrison's character in Once Upon a Time, wears in most of her episodes. It retailed for probably $600.00+ and I haven't seen one for sale online anywhere. I have Cousin It style blonde hair and the same eye-color and face shape as the actress. It would have been the most effortless cosplay ever, and even if I'd decided not to do it myself, I could have sold it for $200.00 or so and made some cash while making an Emma fan's day. When I went back someone'd bought it. I can only hope it went to an insanely happy cosplayer who couldn't believe their luck.

I also just bought an Alexander McQueen skirt that Emilie de Ravin's character, Belle, wears in an episode of the show. I spent probably what I'd normally spend in a year on clothes on one skirt. I feel kind of dirty. Especially because the shirt that goes with the skirt is another hundred, the shoes four hundred, and the jacket two hundred. I figure I can probably print some silk and copy the shirt (the original is polyester and I'm a fiber snob, also it'd be cheaper, although button plackets=personal hell), and I may buy the jacket in another color and dye it, since I'm good with dye. I might end up biting the bullet and buying the shoes in a different color, since they'd be only $200.00. (I can't believe I'm actually giving a shit about designer anything help me.)

I have a little griffin candleholder that I picked up years ago for a dollar, that I only later realized has a twin on Dracula's dining table in the costumepalooza Bram Stoker's Dracula movie.

And if cosplay expenses in general count, and not just specific clothing, then hoo boy. My costume stuff is probably worth even more than all my books put together, and every wall of the biggest room in the house is bookshelves.

I am one of the Tiger & Bunny fan-weirdos who bought Kotetsu's cologne. No regrets.

I bought the Blue Jeans perfume because apparently Kyo from Dir en grey once said it's his favourite.

I do smell very good in it though, the ladies go crazy for it!

When I was younger I bought any clothes I could find that looked like anything from Digimon 01. I had chunky trainers that made my feet look huge, and I even managed to find a green sleeveless turtleneck like Matt's. Dear god I must have looked a sight.

I also started wearing dog tags after I saw the first X Men film.

As a kid, I convinced my dad to let me order hair gloves because they were featured on Charmed. I even had one with the triquetra on it lmao but I was too embarrassed to wear it outside the house.
